Phonoki, it really is just practise, I have only started yugioh roughly a year ago, but I can 100% assure you I was dreadful for most of it. You just gotta keep practising until you learn ways to keep up/play meta etc. or until you find a way to stand up to meta xD , point is, it really is just practise

actually in my opinion the most important step is to have decent ruling and card knowledge since for me because i have played the game for a long time (too long) i know almost any deck so i know their plays and how to prevent them from going off when to negate an eff to stop their plays ,of course you do have to know your own deck and a good deck which has very few if any dead draws
